This blog is written for people who are, or plan to be, business owners. So what distinguishes it from all the other blogs with that theme? In a word: Politics. Let me explain.
Surveys show that the number one motivator for running your own business is the freedom it affords you. But that freedom is illusory.
Everyone in society yields some of their independence simply by virtue of being a member of society. Business owners yield even more independence than they first realize…that is until they run into legal and regulatory compliance issues they had no idea even existed when they started. Of course there is a running debate over whether regulations are good for business or bad. But laws and regulations are here to stay, they have a life of their own.
And that is where politics comes in. “You may not be interested in politics, but politics is interested in you.” (Attributed to various people, including Pericles, and ancient.) Plato said, “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.” And here’s one from Ayn Rand: “I am interested in politics so that one day I will not have to be interested in politics.”
So you should be interested in politics. But you’re running as fast as you can just to keep the business going. How can you add politics, of all things, to your repertoire? The answer is, as with so many other things, you hire it out. In this case, you simply have to come back to this blog periodically to see what’s happening that will affect your business. I’ll try to keep you up to date.
