There seems to be a notion that creating more jobs is the key to creating more wealth.
Really?!
If that were true, then we should outlaw the use of all modern capital equipment. We should return to an agrarian economy where every single person has to work hard every single day just to survive. Houses would be built without power tools, and there would be no time-saving computer technology permitted in any job or any home.
Then there is the economic theory that destruction of existing resources creates wealth by be renewing the need for building activity.
Really?!
Then I suggest everyone who believes that theory should have a bonfire of all their possessions right now. Or better: Let’s have a catastrophic Gulf oil well blowout every year! No! Even better: Let’s drill oil wells off of every coastline in America and let just let the oil spoil onto all the pristine beaches. If this prevailing economic theory is correct, the resulting devastation will result in enormous riches for all Americans!
I, for one, don’t believe either of these theories. I am absolutely certain that wealth is created by acting on ideas to create new goods and services with less human labor. If you agree, then you should spend some time dreaming up ideas for new goods and services. Keep a diary of your ideas. Then have a quick conversation with an intellectual property attorney to make sure you know how to protect your ideas. And once protected, start talking to other people about how you can act on those ideas.
Don’t destroy wealth, create more. You and society depend on it.
