It must be election time because pundits are weighing in, talk show hosts are showing their colors, and celebrities are pretending they have a brain. But you’ve come to the right place, because only I know what’s going to happen. And the answer is…
It does not matter who wins the presidency, the United States of America has already lost.
Four years ago, no one knew a thing about Obama. Some voters went for him because he was very good at reading a teleprompter, and as many prominent Democrats—who love to talk about race—said, he presented himself as a “smart, attractive Black man,” as if that were unique and by itself worthy of our vote.
Today, despite this president’s attempts to keep everything about himself secret, he finally has a record. And the best anyone—anyone, even the most partisan Democrats—can say about Obama’s record is that no one could have done better and things are slowly getting better. Of course the truth is not nearly so “positive.”
Yet with all the bad news coming at us about America all the time—bad news about the economy, bad news about foreign affairs, bad news about an increasingly divided society—Obama remains not only competitive, Obama well could win this election.
How is that possible? How could a president with a demonstrable economic record this bad, a history of covering up not only his personal records but covering up as much as possible of dealings in Congress at home and our embassies abroad, an open contempt for successful business people, an unmatched detachment from half the nation, an enormous and almost pathological narcissism, a continuously visible lack of interest about anything historically and traditionally American…how could such a president be ready to win re-election!
The answer is that America has been fundamentally changed. Sixty percent of Democrats view socialism favorably; ninety percent of Black Americans have been convinced by Democrats they cannot survive on their own without special treatment; teachers demand that schools be operated primarily to fund their own retirement benefits and as a place for indoctrinating students to the ideal of being dutiful tax-paying subjects of government; government employee unions provide massive financial support to Democrat politicians at all levels of government who turn around and give the union members massive pension benefits that will suck all the wealth out of the voters who apparently do not care or do not understand (because they have a bad education); “news” media refuse to provide us with news preferring instead to give us propaganda that support their favorite candidates; celebrities who cannot spell Keynesian economics pretend that they understand the ameliorative effects of “stimulating the economy” to be a known historical fact; science has been completely politicized; outlandish ad hominem attacks replace serious discussion of policy (“Republicans are waging a war on women…” Puleeeze!); and by the president’s own projections this country will reach a debt of $20 trillion by the end of his second term, 133% of annual GDP.
The reason for all of this is that people who called themselves “conservative” have for many decades ignored politics and politicians. Over that time period the progressives won, even if they happen to lose this specific election. It took several generations of that inaction and inattention to allow the country to meander into this state of affairs. If Romney happens to win tomorrow, those conservatives will really have nothing to cheer about. Their decades of inaction have allowed the best nation on earth to become a second-rate pretender that no one can turn around in less than several more generations.
No matter who wins the election tomorrow, America has already lost.
