Who’s Your Protector?

Whom do you trust to protect you? The Progressive politicians want you to trust government bureaucrats (who are also mostly more Progressives) to protect you. That appeals to a certain (growing) segment of the population, but Entrepreneurs tend to be more self-reliant, eschewing the lure of protection—which always comes with a controlling hand.

Historically only pets the smallest children want to be protected by someone outside their own control. Pets want to please their masters in return for being taken care of (especially dogs, IMHO). Domesticated animals often would have great difficulty surviving in the world without humans to take care of them. There is no question that pets absolutely do need a master to take care of them.

And the same can be said of very young children. Human young are incapable of independent survival. But children eventually get the urge to be independent, sometimes even at a fairly young age. Adolescents generally can’t wait to be released from their parents’ “protective shield.” The children suspect their parents have ulterior motives in selecting things like who their friends should be, how late they can stay up, whether or not to study and for how long, what to eat, what kinds of clothes to wear or toys to play with or TV shows to watch—the whole gamut of decisions parents often make for their children becomes something for teenagers to chafe at. They literally “yearn to be free” of parental control.

The same thing happened at the time of the American Revolution. North American colonists decided they had enough of the king’s protection and control and were willing to sacrifice their lives and livelihood to achieve that freedom.

But something strange has happened in the last several decades here in America. Today, after adolescents finally shake off the protective control of their family parents and become old enough to vote, they more and more often are choosing to be under the protective control of another more demanding parent: The “Government.” They look to the Government like an all-knowing god, who must tell them what light bulbs to buy, which schools to attend, what size drink to consume, the kinds of food they must (and must not) eat, what kind of health “insurance” to buy, how to travel to work…. The list of protective control dictates goes on and on, and young people buy into that protective control hook, line and sinker. And politicians, especially Progressive politicians, absolutely love that submissiveness! Because once a group of people becomes dependent on a certain political block for their “protection,” that group will forever vote for that political block.

As society becomes more and more dependent on Progressive politicians, what does that mean for you Entrepreneurs who love the independence to develop your ideas? Many Conservative politicians and pundits complain about the situation of creeping Government control, but I believe the rise of a more dependent society means independent thinkers like Entrepreneurs will become more and more valuable to society.

You see politicians are completely incapable of producing wealth—they simply are not smart enough and their methods are not suited to it. So even though Progressive politicians believe they have to demonize wealth producers, it’s actually a fine line they tread. According to Government’s own statistics (analyzed in this article), the policies of those Progressive politicians are having a devastating effect on self employment and small business formation in America. But those same Progressive politicians cannot completely shut down Entrepreneurs, because Progressive politicians need Entrepreneurs, who are the only people capable of making the wealth all those dependent parts of society want to consume. Even Progressive politicians need at least some independent thinking Entrepreneurs who have ideas and are willing to take risks to find out if consumers like their ideas.

So Progressive politicians may vilify you, tax you, harass you, and try to control you, even to the point of suing you occasionally. But those same Progressive politicians need you and your ideas. And as more and more of the population succumbs to the siren call of being dependent on the Government, truly independent thinkers like you Entrepreneurs will be needed—and rewarded—even more.

So practice your independence, start a company to exploit your ideas, especially now that independent thinking is in decline. The growing dependent society needs you more than ever!
